Tablecloths add a touch of elegance to any table on any occasion, but cleaning them the wrong way can ruin their look completely! Here is an easy method from Tavola for cleaning your tablecloth and keeping it looking as good as new:

How to clean a tablecloth properly

1- Read the care instructions on the fabric

The first essential step before any cleaning is to read the care label attached to the tablecloth. Some fabrics, such as linen or pure cotton, need a cold wash on a gentle cycle, while blended fabrics may tolerate higher temperatures. Ignoring these instructions can cause the fabric to shrink or lose its original colour. To save time and effort, you can use mesh laundry bags, which help protect delicate fabrics in the washing machine, or alternatively, use a stain-resistant tablecloth, which you can clean in seconds by wiping it with a sponge.

2- Treat stains straight away, before they set

It is always best to deal with stains as soon as they happen, because a tablecloth is much easier to clean before the stains dry or cling to the fibres of the fabric. Use a clean cloth dampened with cold water and dab the stain gently rather than rubbing it, to avoid damaging the weave or spreading the stain over a larger area. Remember that a calm, quick response is the secret to keeping your tablecloth clean and elegant.

3- Choose the right way to wash it

Not all tablecloths can be washed in the same way: some can go in the washing machine, while more delicate types need to be hand washed. It is important to check the care instructions for each type of fabric and to choose a gentle programme and a suitable temperature. It is also advisable to use a mild detergent free from strong chemicals, to keep the fabric soft and the colour fast.

4- Air drying is the best option

Even if your tablecloths are suitable for tumble drying, high heat can cause the fabric to shrink or damage decorative patterns and embroidery. It is therefore best to hang the tablecloth in a well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, either on a line or laid flat on an even surface. It is also better to dry it in a way that keeps creases and folds to a minimum, so that it is easier to iron on the reverse side if necessary.

5- Store tablecloths in a way that preserves their beauty

Once the tablecloth is completely dry, it is best to fold it neatly and store it in a dry place away from heat and damp, such as in closed drawers or cupboards. Avoid keeping tablecloths in plastic bags, as this traps moisture and can lead to mould or unpleasant smells. You can organise your tablecloths by use or by size, using dividers or fabric boxes that allow air to circulate, which keeps them in good condition and makes them easy to find.
